Den
svenske tryllekunstner Zarro Zarro (Rolf R. Wollert, født i 1932)
bor i Paris og har i mange år under overskriften DET SKER I PARIS
skrevet først til tryllemagasinet Pegasus, siden
til hjemmesiden Cirkus i Danmark, om artistoptræden, herunder cirkus, i Paris. Han
har boet i Paris siden 1993. Zarro-Zarro er egentlig uddannet som
PhD i fransk, og arbejdede i flere år som lektor i fransk i Göteborg.
I 1970
fandt Zarro Zarro ”stugan för trång” og fik arbejde som lærer i Zambia,
hvor han var frem til 1973. Undervisningssystemet i Zambia bød på 3
måneders arbejde og derefter en måned fri osv. Og frimånederne
benyttede Zarro Zarro til at optræde som tryllekunstner i en række
afrikanske lande: daværende Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Mocambique,
Mauritius Island og Zambia, nemlig i hovedstaden Lusaka og i
Livingstone på det prestige-fyldte luksushotellet MOSI-O-TUNYA, opkaldt
efter det lokale navn for Victoria Falls. Derefter var han et par år
tilbage i Göteborg, inden
han i 1975 fik arbejde som lærer på Elfenbenskysten, hvor han var de
næste 10 år.
Sommerferierne fra juli til september tilbragte han i
Paris, hvor han optrådte sammen med datteren Madeleine. Deres
paradenummer var Det Spiritistiske Kabinet, som derfor ligger Zarro-Zarro
meget på hjerte.
Det har givet ham lyst til at skrive følgende artikel om Det Spiritistiske Kabinet.
DET SKER I PARIS -- det är visst och sant
-- men också annorstädes kan man se och höra klassiker -
inom teater, musik, litteratur och -- CIRKUS, VARIETE och
CABARET !
Det finnes odödliga prestationer som varit och är till vederkvickelse och underhållning för generationer.
Det utmärkta variété- och cirkusnumret DET SPIRITISTISKA KABINETTET
daterar sig från 1800-talet då så kallade medier påstod sig ha
övernaturliga krafter och därmed kunna utföra otroliga handlingar.
Givetvis hade allt detta sin naturliga förklaring, också de
spiritistiska manifestationer som dessa medier producerade vid sina
seancer.
HARRY HOUDINI var aktiv med att avslöja dessa svindlare.
De två bröderna DAVENPORT uppträdde med sin version av DET SPIRITISTISKA KABINETTET och väckte därmed stort uppseende. Klik her for at læse mere om Davenport-brødrerne.

Beskrivning av numret/ VAD PUBLIKUM SER :
Det utföres av två personer, i regel en man och en kvinna, varav mannen
är presentatör och kvinnan agerar inne i kabinettet, dessutom inviteras
en man från publiken att medverka som kontrollant.
Kabinettet inspekteras, mannen från publiken får binda den kvinnliga
artisten till händer och fötter, allt kontrolleras - och hon
stänges/lukkes/ in i kabinettet tillsammans med diverse föremål, t. ex. visselpipa/fløjte - tamburin, stearinljus, långt rep, bollar, tidning med en sax.
Ridån drages för kabinettets öppning - omedelbart höres
visselpipan och tamburinen, repet kastas ut men har nu massor av
knutar, bollar kastas ut, och tidningen , i vilken det nu är
klippt en stjärna.
Kabinettet öppnas, allt kontrolleras, damen är bunden som från begynnelsen !!
Handlingen upprepas, men nu får damen en trumpet med sig, kabinettet
stänges, presentatören spelar några takter från operan AIDA på sin trumpet, men slutar
plötsligt, man hör nu samma melodi innifrån kabinettet, som
öppnas för ny kontroll - bindningarna är som vid begynnelsen!!!
Sista delen: mannen från publiken får en väst på sig, den är svart på
utsidan, vit på insidan, dessutom blir hans händer bundna och
hans ögon förbundna -- och han får gå in i kabinettet samman med damen.
Efter några sekunder hörs en signal, kabinettet öppnas och man ser att
mannen har på sig västen, men nu avigvänd /vänd ut och in.
En variant är att mannen har på sig sin jacka när han går in i
kabinettet, när kabinettet öppnas har damen hans jacka på sig - UNDER
rep-fängslingarna !!!
Bindningarna kontrolleras, allt är som vid numrets begynnelse.
Den hjälpsamme mannen avtackas och -- STOR APPLÅD !!!
Det skall nämnas att numrets succé beror dels på en livlig, precis och
humoristisk presentation, dels på att den medverkande damen är en smula
contorsionist/ ormmänniska/ slangemenneske.
Ett antal illusionister har utfört och utför ännu DET SPIRITISTISKA KABINETTET:
Fram till 1971 kunde man se det presenterat av Rector Magneticus,
Doctor Philurius, Professor TRIBINI i hans New Scala Variété på
Dyrehavsbakken, nära Köpenhamn.
Hans medium var i regel dottern AASE, som även var jonglör och contorsionist.

Det svenska trolleri-artist-paret THE GALLOS framförde det, den franska
kvinnliga duon ELLES DUO utför det, Martin Arli visade det säsong 2011
i Cirkus Arli.

Martin Arli med artisten Miss Evgeniya som medie. Cirkus Arli har også
flere gange tidligere vist Åndekabinettet, som de kalder det. Martin
Arli fortæller, at deres udgave er inspireret af den amerikanske
tryllekunstner Blackstone

Under 1980-talet presenterade jag numret samman med min dotter
MADELEINE, och detta vid talrika events i Abidjan under mina 10 år i
Elfenbenskusten, samt i Paris, också vid många street-shows.

Til
ære for fotografen viser Zarro Zarro hvordan hans show begyndte, når
han optrådte som street performer: Han blæste på trompet for at gøre
opmærksom på, at der nu var noget spændende at kigge på. Fotos er taget
på terrassen til Zarro Zarros bolig i Arles; man ser den skønne

En personlig kommentar, från alla mina minnen med detta:
Publiken på gatan är i regel folk som kommer ut från café, restaurant,
och ganska sent - ofta vet de inte vad de skall göra resten av aftonen.
DET SPIRITISTISKA KABINETTET ger dem möjligheten att fortsätta aftonen
i gott humör, det bringar dem en angenäm överraskning och folksamlingen
smälter samman till en enhet med god stämning, varest många
nationaliteter med entusiasm ser samma show, med spänning, munterhet
och -- en gemytlig och fredlig samvaro !!
En kostbar pärla som mången internationell organisation - kunde lära mycket av !!!
På den praktiska sidan är det unikt med en illusion som transporteras
lätt, mitt kabinett i aluminium väger inklusive gardinen - 5 kg.
Vid kvalitetsmässigt sett likvärdig prestation, vill en agent alltid
föredraga den artist som har den lättaste rekvisitan - transport kostar
!
Ett antal etablissemang tillåter icke att publiken besväras med att
medverka, det var fallet med Crazy Horse, Paris och - med vissa
undantag - Hansa Theater, Hamburg.
Kabinettet kan ha olika utformning: Davenports hade ett skåp i trä, vanligtvis är kabinettet idag i form av en "prov-hytt" som i mode-butikerna.
Jan Madd's kabinett har formen av ett "jätte/kæmpe/ ägg" som är fixerat i taket på teatern, mitt kabinett är i triangel-form, av aluminium-stänger med gardin i modernt mönster.
Karaktäristik:
Publiken identifierar sig med mannen från publiken, de känner trygghet då de ser att han har lika muntert som dem i salen.
Numret är oförklarligt för de icke initierade, det skapar spänning, vilken upplöses i det glada skrattet/grinet.
Numret har vidare ett estetiskt värde på grund av en elegant, feminin partner;
Slutligen ger denna illusion SAMTALS-ÄMNE efter show.
Man vet att publiken kommer till Cabaret för de flotta tablåerna, men vid utgången talar de om - trolleri-illusionerna !!!

Swedish magic entertainer ZARRO ZARRO / Rolf R. Wollert, born in 1932/ lives in Paris since 1993. He
is busy as a writer, having contributed to many magazines, mainly the
Scandinavian magic magazine PEGASUS PLUS, and under the headline IT ALL
HAPPENS IN PARIS , he is still frequently bringing write-ups in www.circus-dk.dk , on visual performances, including circus.
Zarro Zarro has a PhD in French, taught in Göteborg on the Swedish west coast, as well as in Zambia, Ivory Coast and Paris. During
his years /l970 thru 1973/ in Zambia, he taught secondary school,
organized according to the British educational system, meaning three
months of work and one month of holidays.
These holidays provided the
possibility of travelling and performing his magic act in the /then/
Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, Mocambique and the Mauritius Island, mainly
cabarets and night clubs. In Zambia, in the capital Lusaka
and in Livingstone he performed at the prestigious luxury hotel
MOSI-O-TUNYA, named after the local language's name of Victoria Falls.
After a two-year stint back in
Göteborg, he landed a contract with the Ivory Coast government,
Ministère de l'Education, it lasted for ten years until 1985.
Being posted in the economic
capital ABIDJAN, he had numerous possibilities to perform in front of a
public, eager to get entertainment: schools, sea-side-resorts, social functions, hotels, night clubs and cabarets.
Abidjan was the Paris of West Africa ... !!!
The holidays here /July -
Sept/ were the same as in France /former colonial power/ - he
went to Paris, performing in street-shows and many cabarets.
Together with daughter MADELEINE, they featured the SPIRIT CABINET that became their signature act.
This being so - this article was written to commemorate a wonderful time and memorable experiences.

IT ALL HAPPENS IN PARIS -- but sometimes also -- elsewhere
-- where we can meet the classics: theatre plays, music and
CIRCUS, VARIETY and CABARET.
There are immortal performances that have enthralled, amazed and entertained audiences for generations.
The wonderful Specialty Act, called THE SPIRIT CABINET was first seen
in the mid-1800s, in the USA, when fraudulent mediums claimed
possessing weird and spiritual powers and thus swindling and taking
advantage of bereaved people who desperately tried to get into contact
with the diseased loved ones.
The FOX sisters were the most well-known among these con people. All their manifestations had, of course, natural explanations and
honest magicians like HARRY HOUDINI spent time revealing the frauds.
THEN -- this feature was adapted to the Vaudeville stage, where
the BROTHERS DAVENPORT, imitating the manifestations of the spirits
while both of them were tied and locked up in a kind of cabinet, amazed

Description of the act / WHAT THE AUDIENCE SEE AND HEAR:
Two performers, usually a man, presenting the act and a woman, playing the role of the medium.
One man from the public is invited up onto the stage to act as a controller.
The cabinet is inspected, the man from the audience ties the "medium's"
hands and feet, she is led into the cabinet where various objects are
displayed: a whistle, a tambourine, a candle, a long rope, some balls,
a newspaper, a pair of scissors.
The curtain covering the front of the cabinet is closed, at once there
are whistling sounds and noise from the tambourine, the candle is
lit, the rope is thrown out but now having several knots, balls
are likewise thrown out as well as the newspaper where a big star has
been cut out.
The cabinet is opened, everything is controlled, the "medium" is still firmly tied !!
This scenario is repeated, but now the "medium" gets a trumpet on her
lap, the curtain is pulled, the presentator starts playing a few bars from the opera AIDA on
his trumpet, but is interrupted by - the same melody being played
inside the cabinet !!

The last stunt:
The man from the audience gets dressed in a black waistcoat, it is
pointed out that the lining is white .. his hands are tied
and he gets a blindfold, preventing him from seeing anything.
He enters the cabinet where the "medium" is.
A few seconds pass, a signal is heard, the curtain is pulled open, the
man is still wearing the waistcoat but it is now turned inside-out so
the white lining is seen !!
In a different presentation the man keeps his jacket on, enters the
cabinet, curtain is pulled, when it is opened the "medium" is wearing
the man's jacket --- UNDER the tied ropes !!!
The knots are examined, they are still firmly tightened.
The assisting man gets a big thank you - and there is a strong applause !!!
The success of THE SPIRIT CABINET is based on a lively, interesting,
clear and humorous presentation which all the same should be delivered
as quickly as possible, and on the quick work and somewhat
contorsion-like performance by the medium.
A number of magic entertainers performed and still perform THE SPIRIT CABINET:
Until 1971 it was featured by the famous Dane - Professor TRIBINI, at
his variety show NEW SCALA, Dyrehavsbakken Fun Fair, near Copenhagen. His daughter AASE, a juggler and contorsionist, acted as the "medium".

THE
SPIRIT CABINET featured in 2011, by Director of Cirkus ARLI, MARTIN
ARLI and performed with circus artist MISS EVGENIYA as medium.
CIRCUS ARLI has repeatedly
performed the Spirit Cabinet, Martin Arli tells us that the
presentation and stage performance are inspired by American magic
entertainer BLACKSTONE.

In 1980 and some years forward, I frequently performed it with my
daughter MADELEINE, then aged 13, mainly at events in Abidjan, Ivory
Coast, where we lived, but also in Paris as a main attraction for
street shows.

For
the photographer Zarro Zarro shows how his show began when he appeared
as a street performer: he blew the trumpet to make the audience aware
that there was now something exciting to watch. Photos shot on

If I may be allowed a personal remark, coming from my memories:
The spectators of a street show are mainly people leaving a café, a
restaurant rather late -- and often they don't know what to do for the
rest of the evening.
THE SPIRIT CABIN SHOW allows them to continue in a good mood, it
provides them with a pleasant surprise - the crowd melts into a
sympathetic
audience where many nationalities enjoy the same show - sharing suspense, laughter and -- a peaceful co-existence !!
A precious pearl that might well serve as a leading light for many an international body !!!
On the practical side, it is unique and has a great advantage - being an
illusion with which you can travel light - my cabin made of aluminium
weighs 5 kgs, curtain included.
An agency will prefer an act that travels light - provided the qualites of the acts are equal ...
There is a restriction: some establishments don't allow interaction
with the public on stage, the philosophy is that people go to the
cabaret to be entertained and happy, not to work.
This was the case at the Crazy Horse, Paris and - often - at the Hansa Theatre, Hamburg.
The very cabinet can be constructed in various ways, today it is
constructed as a kind of fitting-room, found in the fashion shops.
Jan Madd's cabin is egg-shaped, it can be opened and closed, attached hanging from the ceiling.
My cabinet has a triangular shape, made of aluminium rods that are easily assembled, the curtain has a modern design.
Characteristics:
The secret/modus operandi of the plot remains a mystery to the
audience, this creates suspense that is relieved by the laughter
accompanying the stunts.
It has an esthetical value, due to nice props and an elegant medium and the audience identify
with the man from among them on stage - viz. when seeing that he
is as much amused as they are.
Finally, this scenario provides interesting conversation topics, after the show.
THE SPIRIT CABINET is for eternity -- everywhere and also when - IT ALL HAPPENS IN PARIS !!!
